California Massage Regulation
On September 1, 2009, the California Massage Therapy Council began issuing California's first state-wide certificates. The new certificate has two levels of voluntary certification for massage professionals.
Certified Massage Practitioners have 250 hours of continuous training from a state approved school.
Certified Massage Therapists have at least 500 hours of total training, or passing scores on a national exam, such as the National Certification Exam or the MBLEx or an equivalent out-of-state license. We're pleased to see California keeping pace with the rest of the country. The ASM Therapeutic Massage program has always exceeded California requirements.
We've got you covered!
The 650-hour Therapeutic Massage Program offered at ASM not only provides you with all of the requirements for eligibility to take the National Certification Exam - we specifically prepare you for the test.
When researching massage schools, ask them if they have reviewed the most current requirements and subject breakdown, and if their classes specifically address those needs. It is possible that a school meets the "requirements" but does not specifically cover the necessary material. Our goal is to help you pass the Exam.
National Certification required or accepted in over 30 states.
ASM has always provided training that exceeds the requirements for most areas in our state; now our students will be eligible for the highest level of recognition by the California Massage Therapy Council. As an NCBTMB Assigned School, we prepare our students for National Certification as an opportunity to affirm their skills and to have more professional mobility. At Arcata School of Massage, our approach is to prepare you for the future, and to keep up with the industry-wide standards. We're pleased with the new laws in California, both for what it means for our industry and our students.
