Massage Basics


This enjoyable daylong workshop is designed for those considering professional training at ASM and those wanting to learn basic Swedish massage technique for friends and family.You’ll learn some fun and effective hands-on techniques, and experience the optimal body mechanics and quality of touch exercises that will benefit you and your client.

There will be an Open House from 1-2 p.m. for class participants and prospective students to learn more about the ASM 700-hour Therapeutic Massage and Somatic Bodywork Certification Program.

No Experience Necessary.

Katherine Perry, CMT is the Principle Massage Instructor at ASM and a graduate of the Mendocino School of Holistic massage and the School of Shiatsu and Massage with training in Swedish/Esalen, Polarity, Deep tissue, Hot stone and Aquatic massage. She integrates the energy and physical bodies for a truly holistic massage. Her approach to teaching includes an emphasis on body mechanics and professionalism as well as guiding students to find their own creativity.

Ortho-Bionomy®

Moving with the body's preferences to increase comfort, Ortho-Bionomy non-intrusively relaxes tensions and releases holding patterns.  Learn ways to asses tensions and imbalances, hands-on techniques to relax, release, re-educate the body, and Ortho-Bionomy's application to other bodywork and "real life." No pre-requisites.

Ayurvedic Massage Spa Class

Enjoy giving and receiving a three-hour "Ayurvedic Bliss Therapy" treatment. Bliss therapy truly lives up to its name and can be given to clients or loved ones. These powerful therapies are used for disease management and prevention in Ayurveda (the traditional medicine of India). You will work in groups of three giving and receiving from therapists simultaneously.  You'll learn Abhyanga 4-handed mirror massage, Shirodhara mental stress dissolver, Swedana full-body detoxifying herbal steam, and Garshana exfoliating silk glove massage.  $265 if registered by 4/4/08. $295 after.  $200 if taken as part of the 3-part Panchakarma Program.

Traci Webb is a Certified Ayurvedic Practioner, Pancha Karma Specialist, and Raja Yoga Instructor. She has studied Ayurveda since 1991 and has been in private practice since 1998.  She enjoys teaching Ayurveda and brings her joy and enthusiasm to her classes. Syntropy Insight Bodywork Intensive in Ashland, Oregon

Shari Sunshine has spent the last 30 years studying and teaching massage and bodywork. Her teachers include Pierre Pannetier (Polarity Therapy), Arthur Pauls (Ortho-Boinomy®), Elana Rubenfeld (Rubenfeld Synergy), Shlomo Efrat (the work of Moshe Feldenkrais), Master Mantak Chia (Healing Chi Kung), and many others. Shari founded Syntropy International.

Aaron Steinberg is the Director of the Arcata School of Massage, where he integrates Syntropy Insight Bodywork and Therapeutic Assessment into the curriculum. Aaron is Shari’s Sunshine’s son, and began his formal bodywork studies with Shari 13 years ago.

It gives Aaron and Shari great joy to bring their schools together for these semi-annual retreats.

Pre-requisite: min. 100 hours massage training
